Michael Gawdzik
North Central High School
Indianapolis, IN

The thing about the human species is we tend to be overly analytical of others, and sparsely analytical with ourselves. In other words, we're natural hypocrites. We get so used to the joys of our own lives we must find joy in the judgement of others. What is wrong with them? Why do they sit like that? What brand shoes are those? Is that a fight down the hall? Mr. Gawdzik however, I noticed from the beginning, was different from a lot of those previous humans I'd interacted with. This was the first teacher I'd ever met, to have a basket of pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and a lot of other basic hygiene supplies and daily amenities we usually take for granted, in the front of his class. The first teacher, I'd ever met, to consistently say "Goodmorning, how's everyone's morning going?", the first teacher I'd ever met to admit he wasn't a good student in school, the first teacher I'd ever met to supply granola bars for the class because some kids don't eat at home, he was the first teacher I'd ever met to be so inclusive of all with such an exclusive personality. He knows who he is, what he wants, and he exists in that truth. He never includes any outer influences. That's inspiring. He's goal oriented, compassionate, empathetic, knowledgeable, organized, responsible, punctual, attentive, communicative, and many more things. However, I didn't click on this link today to write some nigh-fan-fiction about my teacher, I clicked on this link today to tell you what sets him apart from other teachers and makes him a valid nomination for this award. The simple answer is, Mr. Gawdzik understands the importance of not only being an educator, but a mentor and role model. He understands the importance of being a teacher and a human. Not just an enforcer of a textbook, a guideline, a code of conduct, or anything else already written in official ink, which is ironic because that's usually what you'd expect of an English teacher, huh? But, a human. Someone who knows how to feel, put themselves in your shoes, understand and work with you when you're having problems instead of just telling you to deal with them, communicates and makes things work for his students instead of just forcing them to figure it out, he's not just a man in a button down with a salary, he actually cares. He takes the time to treat students like young adults, and humans. In my book, he deserves every award.

What makes Ms. Landrew awesome is how sweet, kindhearted, and passionate she is. Her classroom atmosphere makes excited to go to her class. Since I really enjoy being able to express myself with drawings ,designs ,and sometimes writing her classroom is the perfect place. You know she cares since she stays afterschool grading and giving feedback everyday. Ms. Landrew has helped me become a better student since the beginning of the year improving my writing. Ms. Landrew has supported me inside and outside of the classroom like when she let me stay afterschool with her for my attendance recovery and when she was so understanding regarding my loss. She gave me new opportunities and was even the one to choose me to represent SECA freshman students this year with accepting a reward. I couldn't have done this without her. Ms. Landrew deserves the title of best teacher in the district.

Mr. Stewart is a great teacher, both as a person and as an educator. He is both understanding and firm when it comes to his assignments and is always there to help you in any way you need. He is super funny and uses humor to engage and connect with students. Any time I had an issue with my mental health or the way something was taught, he would go out of his way to understand my concerns and try to work with me on how we could overcome the problem. Even my sister, Bianca, and her boyfriend, Darius, have both expressed the positive impact Mr.Stewart has had on them. It has been years since they graduated from Spring Early College Academy and they still think back fondly to when he was their teacher. Mr. Stewart deserves the recognition of being one of the best teachers on campus and a good teacher overall.

Mr. Stewart is the most helpful person for academic and personal problems. The reason for my excitement in his class is his positive mood when I enter, he also makes class more interesting and fun while learning important stuff. Mr. Stewarts way of showing care is if someone feels off or in a bad position he will talk them out of it and help them if needed. He helps me overcome my social anxiety and my stage fright, and being with him makes me feel the same to be myself as a student and a person. Mr. Stewart is not only a good person the classroom but also outside of school life. anytime you have a chance to meet him outside of school he is a really funny and kind guy to be around. I think Mr. Stewart deserves this notice for being an amazing teacher.

She is one of the most dedicated and hard-working teachers I have known in my two years in the US. There were nights when she had to stay up until 1-2am just to grade papers and wake up at 5am. She also helped me a lot with grammar, vocabulary, and ways to write a quality essay. Ms. Landrew is also very friendly and gentle with all the students. Although she gives a lot of papers and they are often very difficult, I find that those will help me practice the skills needed for college classes. She also showed me that my hard work is recognized by her. In short, although I am shy to told her but I really admire her dedication.

Mr.Halminton teaches very well, he helps me understand algebra very well. His teaching methods are not only fun but also communicative with his students. He's very encouraging and fun, as he does things like play music as the students enter the classroom. He makes it clear he cares about you by always reminding you to check your grades and to come to him if you have any questions. He also gives us responsibilities, so we know what we're up against and learn to be independent and to learn to take care about things. He teaches us how to solve problems on our own but of course, if we need his help, he's there. He’s supported me; for example, when you're absent, they always give you notes to copy and have explanatory videos so that, if you don't understand, you can study separately and refresh the content.

He is funny, cool, and awesome. He is very talkative and brings us energy by making jokes and making us laugh. He lets us know that he cares about us by expressing his emotions and by making sure we know that his class is supposed to be a GPA booster, helpful, and relaxing class. They make me a better student by making me very happy and relaxed throughout the day. Inside the class they have supported me by helping me know what I have missing and making sure I stay on track, outside of the classroom he has helped me by telling me good quotes that help me throughout the day, and by telling me to keep it pushing.

Mrs Ricardo is a great teacher I hope to have her next year for avid II. MMrsRiardi is one of the best teachers in SpringEarly College Academy because of her ability to communicate with her students and check up on every single one of them with grade check-ins, grade reflections, and mental wellness checks helping her students go along the freshmen year.

He is just awesome. He is, in my opinion, the closest thing this school has to a "cool" teacher.
I just like his class, he listens to the students.
He shows that he cares by allowing us to pick our groups for group projects.
He actually lets us have free time if we have nothing to do.

This teacher is awesome because he rarely misses a day of school. I'm always excited to go to his class because I know he will talk about something interesting in our class. His always very attentive and aware of things and to me that shows care. He also always makes me feel better when I get a bad grade and I feel like that just pushes me to do better, and feel supported.

Mr. Hamilton is an awesome teacher because he is accepting of everyone, regardless of everything that makes them different. Some things that make me excited to go to his class are how he teaches us algebra, and his random life stories that he tells us. Mr. Hamilton lets his students know that he cares about them by doing notebook checks every so often to make sure that we have all of his notes, and by offering after school tutorials on Wednesdays so that his students aren't failing his class. Mr. Hamilton has supported me out of the classroom by buying me a gift card as an apology for not being able to attend my quinceañera because he was busy. Overall, I think that Mr. Hamilton is the best algebra teacher in the district and should definitely be nominated.

Renisha Wiley

Ms. Wiley mostly knows every student's understanding of what she teaches, which is Biology and she always lets us ask her important questions about topics we learn which is very helpful, so I think she is awesome. One thing she makes us do to get us excited is give us a little bit of freedom in class, but all her work must be completed for her to give you this opportunity. She lets us know that she cares about us by personally talking to us and asking how we feel at the moment. Ms. Wiley makes me feel better and more confident as a student by giving me notes to refer back to and study for anything assignment or test we do in class, which makes me feel very confident about my work. She has supported me inside and outside the class by asking me if I need help and if I do, just go to her. Overall Ms. Wiley is a very nice and incredible teacher, probably one of the best I've had throughout my school years.

This particular teacher has been one of the best, caring, and reliable, teachers I've ever had. This is due to the fact that he has aided me and others in many ways and taught his students in a very assertive, caring way. Although some people may think of him as simply a Spanish I or AVID II teacher, I believe everyone has a personality besides the one they maintain during school hours. He is one of the teachers who genuinely cares for his students and helps them out the best he can. Instead of getting upset with students who fail his class, he simply encourages them in a heartfelt manner and then resumes searching for ways to help the students improve their grades. Additionally, if I were to count on any of my teachers for any particular reasons such as a resource dependency or a comfort talk, he would be in the top three! Mr. Lopez always tries his best to encourage everyone to come to his class with a positive attitude, and he makes sure to greet us every time we walk in the door of his classroom. This encouraged me to continue with my day with a positive outlook on life, just like he does! I'm certain I am not the only one who thinks this way. Even if I am, I just wanted to show appreciation to him because he has been very thoughtful and kindhearted throughout the school year, and I'm sure he will be for years to come.
